Estelle S. Grieve House (ca. 1899)
This is an unpretentious, 2 1/2 story, end gable Colonial Revival house. It features a modest one story porch to one side of the façade and the interior is typical of the simple detail, clear geometry found throughout this historic neighborhood. Estelle Grieve, who interestingly owned the property in her own name, was the wife of Robert Grieve (1855-1924). Placing the title in the wife's name offered some security in the mercurial economy of the late nineteenth century. A native of Scotland, Robert came to this country in 1866 and became a printer and reporter. Ultimately, he became the state's earliest historian of the textile industry. His publications include The Cotton Centenial, 1790-1890; An Illustrated History of Pawtucket; and The Commercial Opportunities and Possibilities of Providence.
